He Ain’t Heavy

Jerry was rushing out the door to catch up with Ira and Mark. They were outside, and had just given him their code yell, to let him know they were there.

It was Saturday morning, and they had a big day planned. Well as big of a day that you can plan at ten years old. First, they were going to go riding bikes. Then they were going to the movies at their favorite theater, the Nile Theater, where Planet of The Apes was showing. They all really wanted to see that movie. Then they were going to stop by the Dairy Queen. Jerry knew just what he wanted, a cheeseburger with everything on it, fries, and a chocolate shake.

Just as Jerry was opening the door to go out, his mom called out to him. “Jerry. I want you to take Tommy with you.” “Aw Mom. I can’t take him with me. Not today!” Jerry protested. “Take him with you, or you can’t go!” his mom replied. “I get to go with Jerry?” Tommy asked excitedly. “Yippee!” Jerry sighed, because he knew there was nothing he could do. “C’mon Tommy.” He said, frustrated.

Tommy was his little brother. Three years younger. They usually got along pretty well, but Tommy, like most little brothers, liked tagging along with Jerry, even though he had friends of his own age. All of Jerry’s friends knew Tommy. He could be a pain sometimes, but usually he was pretty cool. Sometimes though, Jerry wanted to hang with his friends without a little brother hanging around, and this was one of those times. His mom told him though, that he had to take his brother with him, so that was that.

He got his bike, a Sting-Ray with a banana seat and a sissy bar, and told Tommy to hop on. Ira, and Mark were ready, so off they went. First they stopped by Mr. Fred’s store to get some pop, and candy, and then they were off.

They rode all over the place, with Jerry giving Tommy a “Buck,” as they called it, when you give someone a ride on your bike. They rode for hours. Then they locked up their bikes outside of the movie theater, and went in and watched, “Planet of The Apes.” It was a great movie. They all got a big box of popcorn, and a soda. Tommy, even though he was younger, ate every last bit of his food.

Jerry felt a little tired. After all he had been riding his little brother around all afternoon. He knew though, that Tommy was having fun. He felt protective over Tommy, and when they hung out together, if Tommy wasn’t enjoying himself, then Jerry couldn’t enjoy himself either, knowing that his brother wasn’t having a good time.

After the movie, like planned, they went to the Diary Queen. Jerry got his cheeseburger with everything on it, fries, and chocolate shake. Tommy wanted some onion rings and a cherry dilly bar. Jerry also got him a small chocolate shake, just in case he got thirsty.

This had been a great day. Ira commented, “Man you’ve been bucking Tommy around all day. Aren’t you tired?” “Naw.” Jerry responded. “He’s little light weight.” he said, punching Tommy in the arm. “I know he must be getting heavy by now.” Ira continued. “Naw, he ain’t heavy.” Jerry said. “He’s just my little goofy brother, and I’m always gonna watch out for him.”
