Some You Win, And Some You Lose

As Donna and that Kenny dude walked by, Donna looked back at Mike and gave him a smile, and blew him a kiss. Mike smiled back at her. He sighed as he thought to himself, some you win, and some you lose. Mike really liked Donna, and he knew that she really liked him. He felt like he could take her away from that stupid Kenny if he wanted to, but he wasn’t that type of person.

It had all started after Bible Study one Tuesday. That’s where Mike first met Donna. It was after Bible Study, and he was going to head over to the library to get some studying done. He had a heavy load that term. Richard said he was going too, and he introduced Mike to Felisha and Donna, who were roommates. They had been at the Bible Study, and were also going to the library.

On the way to the library, Richard and Donna were having a robust conversation, and Mike was talking with Felisha. They were going through the basic introductions, you know, where are you from, what’s your major, and so on. Felisha smiled at Mike, and invited him to stop by their dorm sometime. Mike smiled, and said that he would. Then things got switched around. Richard and Felisha started talking about some project they had for a class, and Mike and Donna started walking together. Donna was sort of refreshing. She was real outgoing, and she could be pretty silly.

By the time they got to the library they were both cracking up, but now it was time to study. The four of them found a room where they could all study together. Richard and Felisha started working on their project for the class they had, and Mike opened up his Physics book and started going over problems. Donna pulled out a couple of books, and started in on her studies.

After a few minutes she tapped Mike on the arm. Mike looked up, and she smiled and winked at him. Mike smiled back at her, and continued working on his Physics. A few minutes later she moved her chair closer to his. “Wow. You’re so studious.” She said. “Yeah.” Mike replied. “Aren’t you supposed to be studying too?” He asked. “I know.” She said. “But I’m not really in a studying mood today. I’d rather talk to you.”Mike just shook his head. He knew he wasn’t going to get any studying done this evening. So instead of studying like they were supposed to, Mike and Donna spent the evening talking while Richard and Felisha were deep into their project.

When they all finally left, Donna asked Mike if he would carry her books, which of course, he did. As they were walking, she came up and hooked her arm with his, looked at him and gave him a wink. Mike and Richard dropped Donna and Felisha off at their dorm. Donna made Mike promise that he would come by soon. Mike promised that he would. On the way back to their dorm, Richard joked with him. “Man, I think she likes you.” He said, as he help his hand out for Mike to give him some dap. (Give him five).

Over the next few weeks Mike really wanted to make time to go over and see Donna, but his studies were pretty heavy that term. He would see her some days when he was on his way to his classes, or walking through the student union. She would always stop and give him a big hug, and talk with him for a few minutes. He was always happy to see her, and always promised he would be by soon.

It was getting close to Mike’s birthday, and Penny, a good friend of his, said that she and some of her sorors wanted to plan a little birthday get together for him at her dorm. That’ll be fun, he thought to himself. Penny was a Delta, and he knew most of the Deltas on campus. He just thought it was nice that they wanted to do something for his birthday.

“Donna was asking when you’re coming by.” It was Wes. He and Rodney had seen Donna earlier that day. “She said to make sure I bring you the next time I come over.” Wes continued. Mike and Wes then decided on a date to go over there. Mike’s birthday was next Saturday, so that they decided that would be a good time to go see Donna and Felisha.

Now Penny had told Mike the little birthday get-together she wanted to do was on Friday. This was going to work out fine. The Ques were playing the Kappas in a frat basketball game on Friday, and after the game, he would just head over to her dorm. He was looking forward to it. It should be fun, but he was really looking forward to seeing Donna on Saturday.

Well, Mike went to the basketball game. The Kappas won. They were up big for most of the game, but then the Ques made a comeback to make the game close. The Kappas still won be eight points. After the game, Mike went over to Penny’s dorm, and rang her buzzer. No answer. He waited a few moments and rang again. No answer. He went to the front desk, and they buzzed her room. Still no answer. Mike thought that she must’ve forgotten about it. Oh well, he thought, as he headed back to his dorm.

Saturday evening. It was his birthday. Twenty-one years old. Friends had been wishing him happy birthday all day long. He still wondered what happened with Penny the previous evening. It wasn’t like her to forget things. Oh well. I didn’t matter now. Wes was in the room, and they were getting ready to go over and see Donna and Felicia. This is what he had been waiting for all week. They were just getting ready to head out the door when, Knock, Knock, Knock. Mike looked at Wes. Who could that be? He opened the door, and Penny was standing there. Mike’s heart sank. “Well, are you coming?” She asked. Before he could even answer, she started in. She looked at Wes standing there. “I knew you were gonna forget.” Mike defended himself. “You said it was Friday, and I went over after the game and nobody was…” “No.” Peggy interrupted him. “It was today. Now come on. We have people waiting for us. Oh, hi Wes.” All this time, Wes just stood there laughing. Mike felt sick. “Man, Wes, let them know.” “I will.” Wes replied laughing as he walked out of the dorm room, into the hallway.

Well the little get-together that Peggy planned with her sorors was really nice. Even though he really wanted to be visiting Donna, he thought that here was a friend of his who wanted to do something nice for him on his birthday, so just make the best of it.

The next day, after church and after eating dinner in the dorm with the fellas, Mike decided to go by and try and see Donna. He hadn’t seen Wes so far that day. He went over to Donna’s dorm, but she wasn’t there. He didn’t see Donna for a couple of weeks. She hadn’t been to Bible Study, but her and Felicia weren’t regulars. They just came once in a while.

He was walking through the student union a couple of days later with Ron, and Isaac. It was around noon, so it was pretty crowded. A lot of students would be in the in the lounge watching All My Children on the television, or in the cafeteria eating, or just passing through like Mike, Ron and Isaac. He looked around because he thought he heard someone call his name. A smile crossed his face. It was Donna. And she was walking with….Kenny? For real? Donna went over to Mike and gave him a big hug. Kenny just stood where he was, with his nose all up in the air. Typical Kenny. Mike and Donna talked for a few minutes. She didn’t mention him not making it over the few weeks before. Then Donna went back over to Kenny, and they went about their way.

It sure was good to see her, but with Kenny? Mike didn’t really care for Kenny. He was a Sigma. Mike had nothing at all against the Sigmas, in fact he was thinking about pledging Sigma. It was just Kenny. Kenny always walked around sort of stuck up. He had never said “boo” to Mike, and Mike couldn’t have cared less.

Over the weeks, Mike had heard through the grapevine that Donna and Kenny weren’t doing too well. At first, he was happy to hear it, but then, he didn’t want to wish bad on anyone, so he pushed those thoughts aside. He had blown his chance. He only had himself to blame. Kenny took his shot, and now He and Donna were a couple. At least for now. Well, some you win, and some you lose.
