Sunset Over The Fair

Sunset Over The Fair

How many people like to go to the fair? In Minnesota, the State Fair is very popular. It’s called, “The Great Minnesota Get-Together.” By population, it is actually one of the largest state fairs in the country. I’ve always liked going to the fair. I usually go just about every year, although due to COVID 19 the state fair was canceled for 2020. I have so many memories of going to the fair. It always starts on the third Thursday in August, and runs through Labor Day, so it’s like our end of summer festival. Summer’s last hurrah.

What A Sunset Represents

Sunrises are ok, but I don’t think there is anything like a good sunset. A sunrise represents the start of a new day, which is good, but you’re ready to start moving, and taking care of the things you need to take care of for the day. You’re getting ready to start dealing with all of the worries, and trials the new day will bring. The sunset though, represents the fact that you’ve made it through the day, by the grace of God. You are winding down, and letting the cares of the day wind down too. Your work for the day is completed, and your day is coming to a peaceful close.

Good Exercise

Going to the fair can actually be very good exercise. I know people talk about all the junk food they will be eating, but also, you will be doing a lot of walking. I know if I kept track of it, I probably end up walking at least a few miles at the fair every year. The Minnesota State Fairgrounds is 322 acres, which is about 0.50 square miles. That is quite a ways, especially when you’re walking. If you go from one end to the other a few times, it’s easy to put in at least two, or three miles. That is a good way to work off all of that junk food that we will be eating, which, in turn, will lower the guilt level.

State Fair Foods

Like I’ve said previously, I’ve always liked going to the fair. I am not one of those people who only need to go once every five or ten years. I like to go every year. It is the perfect place to people watch, and the food, the food is something else. I love fair food. I have to give myself a budget so I won’t go out there and eat myself sick. I have a system. I usually start out with a corn dog. Not a pronto pup, but a corn dog. There is a difference. You can taste it. The corn dog is dipped in batter made from cornmeal, and the pronto pup is made with flour, or pancake batter. My preference is definitely the corn dog.

Everything On A Stick

Have you ever noticed how many types of food you can buy on a stick at the fair? Pretty soon, I’m sure they’ll even come up with pop, (or soda, as they say in some parts), on a stick. They’ll figure out a way to make it work. My favorite thing on a stick is the pork chop. Nicely seasoned, and nice and hot. I tried fried alligator on a stick once. Tastes like chicken. You can also find pizza on a stick, fried candy bars on a stick, steak on a stick, and countless other things on a stick.

The Concerts Are Good Too

The fair has some pretty good concerts too. For some concerts, there is a cost, and you need to but tickets, but others are free. I saw George Clinton a few years ago, and it was a free concert, and it was a great concert. Although George Clinton had lost a few steps, he was 75 years old at the time, he still put on a great show. They’ve also had concerts by Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sugarland, Morris Day, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Hootie and the Blowfish, Lionel Richie, and many more. Most of the concerts where you need to buy tickets are held in the Grandstand. The free concerts are held in various areas throughout the fairgrounds.

After A Full Day

After a full day at the fair, with all of the food, all of the people watching, and the music, it was now time for to go. After a full day of fun, all of us were now tired. The fair would continue until midnight, but like I said, we were tired. You look back and there it is. The sun setting behind the Ferris wheel. Beautiful. It’s like the fair is saying goodbye, see you next year. The long lazy days of summer are now over, and the business of Fall is getting ready to start.
