Time To Cruise

It’s an early Friday evening. School is out for the summer, and you’re hanging out with your friends. What better way to spend it than getting in your car, and going cruising.

You had been saving your money from your part-time job at Mr. Johnny’s store, and finally you were able to buy that 1968 Camero Convertible you wanted so badly. It was a little beat up, but it still drove well, and there was no kind of rust on it, or anything. It had an 8-Track player so you could jam your music.

You pick up the fellas, and you just go cruising. First, you have to hit 4th Avenue. Everybody is out, and you just roll down the street, nice, and easy, top down, music blowing, checking out the girls, waving to friends.

Then you hit Lake Street. It’s busy, but you just keep on rolling, seeing the sights. You cross the bridge, and head over to Selby. Little kids are out playing, teenagers hanging out. Life in the city. You hit Dale, and head up to University Avenue. Rock Creek Park is playing on the 8-Track player. Lots of cars are out cruising. You hit the freeway, heading over north, where you head down Plymouth Avenue. People are out.

There is some kind of festival going on in the parking lot of the bank on the corner at Penn Avenue. Turn down Penn, and keep it rolling, music playing. The sun is starting to set, and the sky is golden. Time to head downtown, and hit the Hennepin strip, where all the happenings were on a weekend night.

The streets are packed with cars, and the sidewalks are full of people from all walks of life. The good, the bad, and the in-between. You find a place to park, and all of you head over to Big Boy’s to get some cheeseburgers, fries, and milk shakes. Then time to stroll down Hennepin, and check out the sights.

People heading to clubs, man standing on the corner with a Bible, preaching the Gospel. Prostitutes walking down the street. Fight outside of a bar, police arresting someone around the corner. People going to one of the many of movie theaters on the strip. Teens hanging out. Restaurants, music stores, newsstands, discount hotels, bowling alleys, and much more. Whatever you wanted to do, it was there.

Well, enough with the strolling. Back to the ride. Time to cruise.
